The Miami were a farming people, yet game made up a great extent of their subsistence. Women were the only farmers of the tribe. Using slash-and-burn agriculture techniques, they cultivated corn squash beans, pumpkins, melons, and tobacco. With these, the Miami would make recipes such as soup, cornbread, and stew. In early June, most of a Miami village would go off on a large hunt to hunt bison for the village. In the fall, families would go off individually to hunt smaller game such as deer. In this way the Miami retained a wholesome and somewhat healthy diet.
